Last Weekend of Indulgence

This past weekend was the wine event at my Dad’s that I’ve been looking forward to for some time.  I also knew that this was going to be my bon-voyage of sorts to, both indulgent foods and alcohol, wine in particular.  I went out with a bang, that is for sure!  I had a great time with great people, who could ask for more?

In a way I am looking forward to enjoying these events sans alcohol.  One of the requirements of my surgeon is that we do not drink for one year post op.  It’s not that you CAN’T drink, it’s that they don’t want you to.  Weight Loss surgery patients have an issue with something called transfer addiction.  Right now, my addiction is food.  One year from now, we don’t want my addiction to be alcohol, we want it to be something productive and healthy.  The other reason for no alcohol-it will go to your head much faster post op!  There have been numerous studies done at this point about this, so my surgeons office recommends that if you do ever decide to have a glass of wine, to do it at home with people who will make sure you’re safe.

Sunday the Hubs and I headed out to the town where we are hoping to buy a house to talk to the builder.  We have actually already picked out the model and all of that jazz, but right now are going through upgrades and customizations.  We spent, I kid you not, a solid few hours of conversation on where we wanted the fire place.  Everything else has been simple, but the fire place positioning has been entertaining to say the least!  We even were using creamers and sugar packets at IHOP on Sunday morning to show each other why where we each wanted the fireplace made the most sense.

Over all a great weekend…now off to a liquid diet (someone…I’m not pointing fingers {ME} managed to gain and not lose weight on the supervised diet…opps.)

  1. I’m so glad that you had such a good time at your dad’s party. And designing the new house has to be so much fun, but so overwhelming with all of the details, too. Have fun each step of the way.

Now that you mention it about transfer addiction, it makes sense. My cousin had gastric bypass and then later had to be treated for alcoholism. His mom had died, and he started drinking and because it didn’t take much, he quickly developed a problem. He’s been sober 5 years now, but it is definitely a cautionary tale. Thanks for the reminder.

    • I also learned in yesterdays nutrition appointment that the part of our stomach that is removed is where the enzyme that starts to process alcohol is removed, so it’s the full impact of the alcohol going straight to your intestines!
