Changing Senses

I had read a few posts over on ObesityHelp.com about people’s since of smell or taste changing once they were post op.  There really weren’t that many posts about it, so I didn’t think that much of it.  There were mainly just warnings about not stocking up on too many things pre-op because you might no longer like them post-op.  I seriously wish I had headed this warning more!

Before surgery there were several shakes that I really enjoyed mixed with milk.  I dont know if it’s the smell of taste of the milk, or the smell and taste of the protein powder that is off putting.  I’m leaning towards the milk, because some of the exact same brand of protein powder, just in different flavors, I’ve been a-ok with.  The smell also smells like a pasteur of cows.  I’m going to try Almond Milk after I get to the store this weekend to see if that helps the situation.

My taste buds have certainly changed, not that I’ve had much experience yet with actual food, but things like sugar free vanilla pudding tastes different, not in a bad way, just different.  My sense of smell is INSANE.  I feel like a pregnant lady, I smell absolutely everything and very strongly. I love buffalo chicken salad, the Hubs was eating some the other night for dinner and all I could smell was strong vinegar.  The Hubs ate another salad the other night with French Dressing and I could have sworn there was a skunk in our house.

I’m wondering how much of this will change again once I’m further out from surgery.  I’m in for a roller coaster of changes, that’s for sure!

  1. Some of it just stays changed. There are things now that I eat (and love) that I’ve never loved before, and some of my old favorite healthy foods are simply unpalatable to me. One thing I had just discovered and LOVED just before surgery was lamb. Now I simply can’t stand even the smell of lamb. And I’m more than 2 years out!

  2. It’s fascinating to me that the sense of smell and taste change so much so quickly. This is why I feel so lucky that you’re going through this first – I get to learn a ton! Thank you for posts like this one.
