They warn you not to go crazy pre-op buying all kinds of gadgets, shakes, and containers pre-op, but well, I did. This post is dedicated to the things that I actually use on a regular basis. I have linked to where I ordered them from on Amazon.
2 oz Baby Food Containers
I use these EVERYDAY. I even used them pre-op to hold salad dressing. The lid screws on, so they are safe for lunch boxes. Now I pack my 2 oz (aka 4 Tbsp) meals in them.
3 oz Baby Food Containers
These ones are good for when you want to mix something into them, since my limit is 2oz, a 3oz container allows for some stirring room! Plus the bottoms are flexible, which makes it easy to pop things out of them from the freezer.
Appetizer Forks, Spoons, and Knives
These aren’t the exact ones that I have, I got mine at World Market, but you get the idea. Some people say to use baby forks and spoons, but I’m klassy, so I prefer the real deal. The size is great at forcing you to take small bites!

Coffee Mug Warmer
I LOVE my Mug Warmer so much that I bought two of them. They keep my lunch and dinner warm when I eat and they keep my mugs of decaf team warm. It takes so much longer to eat now than it used to, your food gets cold fast!
Oxo Baby Food Freezer Tray
Post Op, when you make food, one regular serving, or one recipe lasts FOREVER. So a great way not to have waste is to freeze portions of the food. This tray happens to be great because each little space holds 1-1/2 Tbsp of food. I fill each up with 1 Tbsp since that’s my normal serving size for now.
Pill Crusher
I used this every blasted day. You can’t swallow pills immediately after surgery (actually depends on your surgeons protocol.) I have to wait 6 weeks before I can start swallowing pills, so you get used to having to crush them. Some mix well with a little warm water, some with sugar free pudding, and some with yogurt. This pill crusher is awesome. If you spin the top part of the contraption down twice, you wind up with a fine powder (I wonder if crack addicts use these?)
Thermometer
One of the first signs of a leak is a temperature. I didn’t have a thermometer that worked, so I bought this one. It seems accurate enough. You wind up taking your temp a few times a day the first couple of weeks.
Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies and Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies
I’ve been through both of these books a few times. There is a bit of redundancy in them, but you seriously have nothing but time the first couple of weeks. There were a lot of great tips in each. I reference them every day or two.
Hope these help someone on their way through their own WLS Journey!

Thank you for this! It’s good to know the practical side of what you really use. I can’t wrap my head around a 1 1/2 TBSP portion. Insane!!!
It’s 4 Tbsp’s TOTAL, but it’s easiest to measure things out 1 Tbsp at a time. That way I can mix things up if I want!
Hi there, quite interesting. I never considered WLS, since it is not big here in Germany and so I never thought of all the implications. 2 oz. actually leave me in awe. WOW! Keep it up. Janet
