Breaking Up with the Scale #WLS

No Weekly Weigh-In this week.  Actually no weekly weigh-in for several weeks.

About two weeks ago I started to get much more active.  The first week was spent moving.  Boxes going up stairs, boxes going down stairs, lifting heavy things, being on my feet 12+ hours a day while unpacking, shopping for the new house, etc.  Last week was spent formalizing my workout plan to reach my goal of 100 Pounds by February 22nd (aka my 6 Month Surgiversary.)

Since starting all of this activity, my eating has remained the same.  Me and Sleevie McGavin follow the nutritionists plan, we eat protein first, limit our carbs, and now work out.  The scale flips me off every morning with one random number after another.  Some mornings I’m up 2-3 pounds, some mornings I’m down 2-3 pounds.  After doing a lot of reading on the topic of weight loss stalls associated with working out, I’ve decided to divorce the scale until December 22nd, my next monthly scheduled weigh in.  So last Friday, per my request, the hubs hid the scale.  He will bring it out on December 22nd, pending him remembering where he hid it.

It’s frustrating to work as hard as I’m working, have had weight loss surgery, only eat 600-800 calories a day, and then to not see the scale move.  While weight loss is a huge concern of mine, being healthy is an even bigger concern.  So I am just going to keep doing what I am doing.  I am going to continue to stick to my nutritionists plan, I am going to continue to increase the intensity of my workouts, I am going to fight the good fight.  I’m just not going to let the fucking scale dictate how I feel for the day.

This week, I am going to attempt to add 100 extra calories on the days that I do more intense cardio.  So MWF, on my C25K days for example.  I will get those 100 calories from healthy sources, but I’ve seen numerous recommendations to add 1-200 calories on the days I work out.  I pledged to have no sugar in December, so eating healthy is my only option!  I don’t want to stop working out just because it’s caused a pause on the scale.  I don’t want to be “skinny-fat” once I hit my goal weight.  I’d rather weigh 10-15 more pounds and be healthy with great muscle tone, than hit goal and still be a big sloppy mess physically.

I have a HUGE calorie deficit the days that I do cardio.  It’s an experiment.  This whole weight loss thing is just one big experiment to figure out what does and doesn’t work.  Even after weight loss surgery it’s a battle to figure out what does or doesn’t work.  I am going to focus one week at a time on what I can do to break my stall.  No weight loss experiment can be figured out in a day.

Goodbye scale.  I will see you on December 22nd!  If you haven’t moved down, I know my measurements will.  That’s what I am going to focus on for now.

Week 14 Weigh In #WLS

It’s been a bit since I last posted.  I (we) spent the last week closing on our new home and moving, getting settled in, cleaning our old place, etc.  I spent a lot of time running errands, shopping, unpacking, lugging boxes up and down all of the new house stairs.  I am beat, and a bit happy to be back at work.

I completely failed at all things post-op WLS in the last week.  I didn’t get in a minimum of 80 grams of protein daily, I didn’t take the majority of my supplements, I barely got in enough water each day.  I did track my food every single day!  I stayed within 600-800 calories each day, but was heavier on the carbs than normal.  Being back at work is going to force me back into my routine, which I am very thankful for.  I also really miss my regular communication with Bella!  Emailing with her really helps to keep me focused.

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1-10 Post Op -40.6
  • Week 11 Post Op -1.8
  • Week 12 Post Op -3.4
  • Week 13 Post Op -4.0
  • Week 14 Post Op -1.2
  • Total: -63.8 lbs

1.3 pounds and I’ll be in the 230′s.  I haven’t seen the 230′s since I don’t know when.

My goal last week:

  • Actually these are my goals from Week 13, I didn’t make any goals for week 14 :(
  • Focus on tracking every single day, even with the move and having no internet for a few days, I can still track via my phone.
  • Focus on drinking 2 protein shakes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Those will be the three biggest days of the moving process, this will insure that I get in adequate protein.
  • Really focus on water the days that we moving.  It’s so easy to get distracted and not get my water in now.  When I get thirsty it’s too late, I need to keep my water bottle on my hip the entire weekend.

The Reality:

  • I tracked every single day!
  • I was bad about my protein shakes during my week off to move.  I think I had three protein shakes the ENTIRE week.
  • I also was completely loose with the water requirement.  I think I hit 64oz of water 2 days.

My goals this week (15):

  • 64 oz of water, everyday.
  • Minimum of 80 grams of protein, everyday.
  • Vitamin/supplements, everyday.

How was your weekend?

Three Month “Surgiversary” and Weekly Weigh In #WLS

Has it really only been three months since surgery?  It is almost starting to seem like I’ve always lived this way.  Time is just flying by!  I’m feeling really good, I have plenty of energy.  The move this past weekend, I was running around every where, up and down all of the stairs in the house, and never got winded.  I did feel incredibly sore each morning, but heck I was getting in big work outs each day unpacking, moving boxes, going up and down stairs, etc.

I can pretty much eat any food.  I haven’t found anything that Sleevie McGavin isn’t fond of.  I just eat incredibly small portions.  Depending on the food, I eat between 2-4 oz.  I always stick with protein first, and rarely have room for more.  I try new things every few days or weeks, so far so good.  I have even done fine with steak, bbq, chicken, all seafoods, pork, etc.  I have learned how to incorporate eating out into my new life.  Chipotle bowls (minus the rice) now make 5 meals for me.  I can even get 4-5 meals out of the three taco meal at Chipotle.  I still do not eat rice or pasta, but will have a part of a tortilla now and again.

I have gotten back into exercising, see my 6 Month Challenge for more information on that!

One Month Surgiversary Post

Two Month Surgiversary Post

Below are photos from surgery day and then photos from 3 months post op. (FYI If you want to see all progress photo’s here’s a link.)  I’m really starting to see a lot of changes in the photos, especially in my stomach area.  I have less and less of a fat tire around my stomach every month which is really exciting.  My weight loss is slowing down each month.  I am happy to still be in the double digits though.  Hopefully with the increased activity, I will be able to stay in the double digits each month for as long as possible!

Onto the Weigh In Portion…I actually still haven’t unpacked the scale, so I am using the weigh in that I did on Friday before packing it.  With as much moving as I’ve done in the last few days, the scale is bound to be lower than this!

Week 12 Weigh In #WLS

Week 12 post op was awesome.  After week 11, and the scale being stuck so much (probably due to those few pieces of Halloween candy?) it was great to get on the scale this morning and see the scale move down.  I was a bit worried that the scale wouldn’t move because TOM is arriving, but BAM it moved!  We’ve also been under a ton of stress with the closing of the house this week, packing, and the move on Saturday.  I’ve been really focused on tracking though, and it paid off.

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1-10 Post Op -40.6
  • Week 11 Post Op -1.8
  • Week 12 Post Op -3.4
  • Total: -58.6 lbs

I am solidly into the 240′s now, and I don’t hit my 3 month post op mark until next Tuesday.  This makes me start to contemplate a 6 month goal.  Is it to much to think that I could lose 100lbs by the 6 month mark?  It’s roughly 40 pounds in three months, which pre-op wouldn’t have even been imaginable.  But post op it is certainly possible, if I remain focused and up my exercise, which I plan to do once we are moved (and the treadmill and work out equipment are no longer MIA.)  Maybe I’ll say 90 pounds by 6 months.  That would be roughly 10lbs a month.  Something I’m thinking about.

My goal last week:

  • Get in at least 80 grams of protein a day.  This past weekend I was REALLY low on the protein one day and just over 60 grams the second day.  No bueno.
  • Get in ALL of my supplements.
  • Get in ALL of my water, even on the weekend.

The Reality:

  • A couple of days I was at 78-79 grams of protein, the other days I was over.  Seriously, goal met.  1-2 grams inst worth calling it a loss!  I did so much better this weekend than I did last weekend!
  • I didn’t miss a single supplement this week!  I think this is the first week yet.  It’s usually my PM calcium supplement that I miss.
  • ALL of my water was consumed this week.

My goals this week (13):

  • Focus on tracking every single day, even with the move and having no internet for a few days, I can still track via my phone.
  • Focus on drinking 2 protein shakes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Those will be the three biggest days of the moving process, this will insure that I get in adequate protein.
  • Really focus on water the days that we moving.  It’s so easy to get distracted and not get my water in now.  When I get thirsty it’s too late, I need to keep my water bottle on my hip the entire weekend.

Week 11 Weigh In #WLS

Week 11 post op was a bit tough.  There was the Halloween candy, where I ate four pieces on the actual day of Halloween, but I tracked it and moved on.  The scale was stuck most of the week.  I kept bouncing between the 251.6 that I was last week and 252.6, everyday it was either one or the other, but it wasn’t going down.  Talk about frustrated.  I know everyone has stalls, but I am obviously so not looking forward to one.  Thankfully when I woke up this morning BAM the scale was down to 249.8, which means not only an entirely new decade on the scale, but also tells me that I am not yet in a stall, yay!

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1-10 Post Op -40.6
  • Week 11 Post Op -1.8
  • Total: -55.2 lbs

I did make it into a new decade this week, which is very exciting!  Granted, I barely made it into that new decade, but a win is a win right?  That is my first goal for next week, to see that new weight decade.  Things appear to be slowing down a bit in the weight loss department, I hope that the slow down doesn’t last and I get back to 3+lb weeks!  I know that all of the stress from moving is weighing on me a bit.  While I know that we can afford the new house, it still just doesn’t seem real, and is a bit stressful.

My goal last week:

  • Hit the new weight decade.
  • Get in ALL of my supplements.
  • Get in ALL of my water, even on the weekend.

The Reality:

  • I did hit the new weight decade.
  • I got in ALMOST all of my supplements, two days I missed my second dose of calcium.  It’s the best week yet in terms of getting in all of my supplements.
  • I got in all of my water, even on the weekend!

My goals this week (12):

  • Get in at least 80 grams of protein a day.  This past weekend I was REALLY low on the protein one day and just over 60 grams the second day.  No bueno.
  • Get in ALL of my supplements.
  • Get in ALL of my water, even on the weekend.

Week 10 Weigh In #WLS

Week 10 post op was pretty good.  This week was the first time that I ran into any real temptations thus far, and those temptations are ones we are probably all facing right now…Halloween Candy.  I did really well, I did have a kit-kat snack size or three, but never more than one in a day.  It’s not at all that I’m not allowed to have those sorts of things, but it does feel like they could lead down a very slippery slope.  As much as I do have built in portion control thanks to Sleevie McGavin, I do have to make smart choices through out the day.

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1 Post Op -8.6
  • Week 2 Post Op -6.2
  • Week 3 Post Op -2.2
  • Week 4 Post Op -3.8
  • Week 5 Post Op -3.6
  • Week 6 Post Op – No Weigh In (NWI) On vacation!
  • Week 7 Post Op – 6.4
  • Week 8 Post Op -2.4
  • Week 9 Post Op -4.2
  • Week 10 Post Op -3.0
  • Total: -53.4 lbs

I’m 1.7 lbs away from being in an entirely new decade!  That is my first goal for next week, to see that new weight decade.  My clothes are fitting better than ever.  Well, ok, most of them are WAY too big and I’ve donated them or gifted them away.  But I did find an entire section of my closet that I didnt even realize was there, full of clothes in smaller sizes.  Some of them I had to get rid of because they were a bit out dated (I could last wear them in 2002/2003ish), but I did find enough to get me through hopefully the holidays and the house closing.  I really dont want to have to fork over money for clothes before we get into the new house.

My goal last week:

My goal for week 10 is to get in EVERY supplement and hit 75 grams of protein a day.

The Reality:

With the exception of one day (Sunday), I hit or exceeded my protein goal every day.  My supplements (vitamins, fiber, calcium) well I didn’t do so great, but I did way better than week 9!  There were three days where I didnt get in my second dose of calcium and my second dose of multi-vitamins, besides that I got them all in though.

My goals this week (11):

  • Hit the new weight decade.
  • Get in ALL of my supplements.
  • Get in ALL of my water, even on the weekend.

Week 9 Weigh In #WLS

Week 9 post op was really good.  I hit a big mile stone as I passed my two months post op mark (see HERE.)  I also gave a few more foods a try and was a bit more adventurous.  I still haven’t tried raw roughage (fruits and veggies) or red meat, but I will eventually get there.  I have tried more cooked vegetables though.  I am noticing a pattern with my weight loss.  A week of around 2+lbs followed by a couple 3+lbs weeks.  This is a pattern that I can live with, so hopefully it sticks around!

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1 Post Op -8.6
  • Week 2 Post Op -6.2
  • Week 3 Post Op -2.2
  • Week 4 Post Op -3.8
  • Week 5 Post Op -3.6
  • Week 6 Post Op – No Weigh In (NWI) On vacation!
  • Week 7 Post Op – 6.4
  • Week 8 Post Op -2.4
  • Week 9 Post Op -4.2
  • Total: -50.4 lbs

My initial goal was to be down 50lbs by Christmas.  At this rate I could be down 65lbs or so by then.  I suppose I now have a new goal!

Packing and preparing for our move has taken over my evenings, so I will admit, besides taking the dog on two 30 minute walks a day, I’m not getting in much in the way of exercise.  My treadmill is now a storage area for yet to be built boxes, there are things everywhere.  We move in 26 days, so not too much more of the chaos.  I am not one of those people that thrives on chaos, I thrive on organization and routine.

This past weekend I was very very lax about getting in my supplements and my vitamins.  My goal for week 10 is to get in EVERY supplement and hit 75 grams of protein a day.

Week 8 Weigh In #WLS

This might be TMI for the men folk :)

I really wasnt expecting much from this weeks weigh-in, since Aunt Flow reared her ugly head over the weekend.  Luckily the scale did move a bit though!  I am glad to be tracking my weigh in’s in Excel, so that I can see any patterns that develop.  Typically during that time of the month, I’m up 3-4 pounds, but being post-op, I still seem to lose, even on these weeks.  So nice to see.

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1 Post Op -8.6
  • Week 2 Post Op -6.2
  • Week 3 Post Op -2.2
  • Week 4 Post Op -3.8
  • Week 5 Post Op -3.6
  • Week 6 Post Op – No Weigh In (NWI) On vacation!
  • Week 7 Post Op – 6.4
  • Week 8 Post Op -2.4
  • Total: -46.2

I’ve also noticed that the day or two leading up to my period and then the first day or two of the actual period, I can’t get as much in me, whether it be water or food.  I just have no interest in anything food, food just doesn’t feel as though it sits well, etc.  I guess it is a bit hard to explain.

I had an amazing weekend with a lot of great friends and spending time with family!

Week 6 & 7 Weigh In #WLS

Just a quick post.  We landed late last night from our 9 day trip to Mexico, and I have so much to do to get back into the swing of things!

Time is seriously flying by now.  I feel completely normal as a post op weight loss surgery patient, in fact sometimes I forget that I even had surgery.  I learned a lot on vacation about living with Sleevie McGavin in the “real world.”  I was able to track just about everyday.  Some days were better than others (one 800+ calorie day, one day where I didn’t even hit 400 calories.)  I will do a full recap of what I learned on vacation for tomorrow’s post.

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1 Post Op -8.6
  • Week 2 Post Op -6.2
  • Week 3 Post Op -2.2
  • Week 4 Post Op -3.8
  • Week 5 Post Op -3.6
  • Week 6 Post Op – No Weigh In (NWI) On vacation!
  • Week 7 Post Op – 6.4
  • Total: -43.8

6.4 pounds is HUGE in two weeks, especially for being on vacation!  I was a little worried all week about how the different things I was eating were going to impact my weight loss, but the scale showed me how well I did!

More on vacation tomorrow!

Week 5 Weigh In

Week 5 is now over, now onto week 6!  This is “technically” my last week on mushy/pureed foods.  By “technically” I mean that my nutritionist wants me to wait to get back from our vacation next week (week 7) before I move on to any truly solid foods.  We are going to Cancun, so I know that I’ll be OK since seafood and beans are all on the mushy/pureed foods list.  I just have to keep chewing things really well.

The different textures that I added during week 5 have gone very well.  I was a bit worried when I tried shrimp that they would be hard to get down, but since I chewed them so well, they were a breeze.  Never in my life have three shrimp filled me up though!

This weekend was a busy one!  Saturday was spent running errands out to our new house that is in the process of being built, then off to watch the VA Tech game with my Dad.  I did a horrible job of planning on Saturday.  I didn’t realize that I was going to be out of the house the ENTIRE day.  I initially figured I’d have time to run home for a bit between the errands and the game.  No luck.  It’s the first time in weeks that I haven’t met my 70+ grams of protein a day goal.  I stopped to pick up a snack while running errands, the best choice available was cottage cheese, so I went with that.  Sunday was a day full of lots and lots (and lots) of laundry and cleaning the house to prepare for one of my girlfriends staying over while we are in Mexico to take care of our dog.  I need a nap :)

Onto the Weigh In Portion…

  • Pre-Op 2 Week Liquid’ish Diet -12.8 lbs
  • Week 1 Post Op -8.6
  • Week 2 Post Op -6.2
  • Week 3 Post Op -2.2
  • Week 4 Post Op -3.8
  • Week 5 Post Op -3.6
  • Total: -37.2

I feel better and better everyday!  On the outside I have completely recovered.  My incisions are no longer covered with the glue that they used to seal them, and aren’t even scabbed anymore.  I have been cleared for the ocean and pool while on our vacation, which I am super excited for.  I still get tired fairly easily, and sometimes completely out of the blue, but the doctor said that this is completely normal.  It can take a while for my body to get used to it’s new normal (600-700 calories a day.)
